I saw Episode III. Now I think about it. by mike

I'm still unsure of what I just saw. In the beginning of the film I was certain I was about to wake up from the nightmare I was having and then I would be able to go see the real Star Wars movie I had been so anxiously awaiting. I began the day by watching Episode 1, 2, and the Clone Wars cartoon series so I was all ready for the big climax of the six movie series. I'm very happy I did.

When the Star Wars music began and the scroll began I was in heaven. Another star wars movie for me to see and finally some closure and hopefully some answers to the burning questions of the saga. After the awesome opening scene with the space battle our two heroes hopped into the hangar of a ship. This is when my nightmare began. The dialogged was below B-movie standards and the cheese was light years ahead of what had been seen in previous Star Wars films. I held on and hoped it would get better. Alas, it only got worse. The scenes between Padme and Anakin were painful. "I love you." "No, I love you more." What the hell is this? A third grade play?

I understand that Lucas was trying to convey how Obi-Wan and Anakin had become great pals and now they joked around and had a good time, but the jokes were so forced and the lines were delivered with such dryness it makes Tatooine look like Kamino. The characters that weren't introduced in the other movies were never actually introduced in this movie. General Grievous may be the least developed character in the history of film. He is supposed to be the bad ass who kills jedi like nothing. However, inexplicably he begins the film like a weak battle droid. Now for those of us who watched the Clone Wars we can understand this, but how are people who didn't see the cartoon supposed to know what is going on? I am completely unable to care about what happens to this guy, or droid, or cyborg because I have no idea what he is doing or even what he IS for that matter. He has a heart and eyes, but he is a robot. I am confused and my confusion makes me not able to follow the movie.

I wanted to like this movie a lot. I truly did. The negative points just so outweighed the positive that I can't like this movie. I very much liked the fight scenes at the end. That was awesome and sent chills down my spine. There were also a couple lines in the movie that didn't feel forced and stupid, but those were few and far between. Also, the ability of Clone Troopers to just turn around and kill Jedi with no problem really made me upset. Every Jedi save for Ki Adi Mundi and Plo Koon (because he was in a ship) didn't put up a fight and all and just died by what are to become STORMTROOPERS! I really think Lucas has lost his mind.

Many people tell me "Man those effects were awesome". To them I can't agree, because I thought the same thing during the movie. If the effects were actually that good, I shouldn't be able to notice them at all. A prime example of truly awesome effects are the Lord of the Rings movies. Before you completely stop reading and send me to the Lord of the Rings fanboy pit allow me to explain myself. I love Star Wars. There is nothing that could change that. Star Wars will forever be my favorite movie of all time because it genuinely represents such a large part of my childhood. Hardly a day would go by where I would not watch Star Wars. So don't clump me into the group of people who didn't like Episode III just because it was Star Wars, in fact, I actually liked Episode 1 and 2. Back to the topic of effects. They were so well done in LotR and I never thought once during the movie that the effects were good. They were so good I didn't notice them at all. That is how you can tell if effects are good or not.

Another thing that really bothers be what the amount of scenes that just didn't need to be there. The entire Wookiee thing was completely useless. It did nothing for the Chewbacca character and just made me even more angry. That scene was there for nothing but nostalgia and did nothing to progress the plot. The place where Obi-Wan goes to fight Grievous is not needed either. The conversation with Tion Medon didn't really do anything but introduce more people to make toys of. Maybe this is just a knee jerk reaction to the film not living up to my expectations.

I'm sure Episode III will grow on me and I may even go on to actually like it. I don't feel I will be able to say it is a good movie though. The emotions brought about by the duels and what is actually happening are cool, the way we go to the duals though are just so full of plot holes and scenes that were completely useless. I rate Episode III a 2.5 out of 5, and that is with my incredible Star Wars bias.
